The March 18 Movement was born out of a tragedy. On this day in 2009, Omid Reza Mir Sayafi, Iranian blogger and journalist, died in Evin Prison in Tehran. We have chosen to call this movement the March 18 Movement in order to honor Omid. Each March 18 from now on will stand as a day of memorial to Omid and to all the innocents he represents. We must unite to make March 18 the definitive day for commemorating the risks taken by bloggers around the world to tell their stories.

NABUUR leverages the Internet to enable people around the world to connect and collaborate. Online volunteers are matched to and linked with local communities in developing countries through www.nabuur.com. The people living in the villages formulate projects to address local issues. Together, the community and volunteers find solutions. For volunteers, the focus is not on donating money, but on sharing knowledge, ideas and contacts. This novel approach leaves the initiative in the hands of the villages. NABUUR combines the best of the old (neighborly help) with the best of now (the internet).

What started out in Vienna last October quickly became a European education movement. By using web 2.0 tools and with a decentralized structured the students simply ignored authority's way of agenda setting. The students became the ones setting the agenda and forcing the politicians to talk to them. A peaceful and very constructive discussion started ...

Mega trends are shaping the global agenda. Their impact is reaching far into our daily lives. We are gathering tons of information on each single trend, but we hardly know anything of how these trends interact, which interdependencies exist between them and what they will cause. Up until today science generates knowledge in a very exclusive way: research results are mainly discussed within closed "expert" communities far away and mostly untouched by a broader audience. Internet and social networks aren't embraced by scientists. But we think science should become more public, and science should depend on public support. Science must inform the public. This is not a luxury, it's an obligation! And further more we argue, that science should broad up the horizon of the own discipline. Why? Simply because of the complexity these challenges. They become perceptible not only on a global, but first
and foremost on a regional and local level and we need all we can muster to manage safe passage.
The “Future Challenges”-Team intends to overcome these limitations. the new internet-platform www.futurechallenges.org (launch beta; April 2010, 1.0 in summer 2010) aims to spread knowledge on global change and make it accessible for everybody. www.futurechallenges.org wants to foster the dialogue between experts and non-experts. Our aim is to empower people and institutions to discuss future challenges.

ARS ELECTRONICA - Digital Communities

This year I was again invited to join the International Advisory Committee of the Digital Communities category of Prix Ars Electronica.

Since 2004 digital communities are part of the Ars Electronica Awards. Within the next few weeks I will dive through the net in order to find nominees for the competition. If you do have any suggestions, please let me know ... Thank you!

On the website is says: The "Digital Communities" category focuses on the wide-ranging social and artistic impact of the Internet as well as on the latest developments in social software, user generated content, mobile communications, mash-ups and location based services. Digital Communities" focuses on innovation in human coexistence, efforts to bridge the geographical as well as gender-based digital divide, overcoming cultural conflicts and fostering cultural diversity and the freedom of artistic expression. Consideration is also given to projects that advance the practice of sharing and the formation of a “Cloud Intelligence”, and that facilitate access to technological-social infrastructure. Digital Communities spotlights the political and artistic potential of digital and networked systems and is thus designed to singled out for recognition a broad spectrum of projects, programs, artworks, initiatives and phenomena in which social and artistic innovation is taking place, as it were, in real time. A Golden Nica, two Awards of Distinction and up to 12 Honorary Mentions will be awarded in the Digital Communities category in 2010.

Chinese Twitterersare experimenting Online Flash Mob

In China they've built the "Great Firewall of China" (#GFA) which officially runs under the name "Golden Shield Project". This firewall blocks e.g. twitter and if THE censorship tool of the Chinese Government.

Today Chinese netizens will show their government how powerful the twitter community is - even though twitter is banned in China. Every Sunday afternoon they are experimenting an online flash mob to push the hashtag #GFW to top trending list of Twitter.
